SPRING NEWS LETTER 2014

May 10, 2014

Dear Village of Vernon Residents,

Hope this letter finds everyone well. Finally spring has arrived (so the calendar says), people are coming alive, walking the streets, cleaning up their yards and enjoying the weather. On that note let’s get some of the rules out of the way.
When mowing please keep grass clippings out of the street as they clog our storm sewers. Put brush out by the curb, but not in the street and separate from grass clippings to keep our roads clear and make our DPW guy’s job a little easier. Sunshine brings out our children, playing ball, riding bikes etc, so slow down on our village streets. Speed limit is 30 MPH (20 in a school zone). This keeps us all safe. Although, we will put fine money to good use! Dogs must be leashed and cleaned up after when walking. If your dog likes to bark a lot remember your neighbors might not enjoy it as much as you and there is a village ordinance about barking dogs.
Garbage cans are not to go out before 4 P.M. the night before trash pickup and picked up before 7 P.M. the night of trash pick up. Appliances and electronic devices such as TVs and old computers are NOT garbage and will not be picked up. Believe it or not there they are considered a hazard material and our guys aren’t “certified” to handle them. Help us keep our village looking as nice as we can.
PLAY BALL! Can be finally heard at our park as the ball fields are finished. Take in a game, as it is a nice cheap night out. We are breaking ground for new playground equipment and a bigger safer play area. I am excited to see it finished and being used. Also tennis court has been taken down, as it was too expensive to resurface. It made a whole lot more room. The Village Board is looking to find more ways to use it. Maybe a family movie night and a concert. Possibly a farmers market would be nice. If you have any ideas as to an event please contact one of us and help us get the ball rolling. I still want to put up a new pavilion down there but not sure if we have funds.
Park program will be at the Village Park this year with the Grand Marshal Jessica Plank at the helm. Thanks to Jess our park program is revitalized. It will start Tuesday July 8th at 9AM till Noon, and be on every Tuesday Thursday and Friday through August 8th.Finishing with a Field trip and Pizza day.
Parking at the village park has always been an issue. We have striped for parking spots if they are full use Village Hall parking lot. We need to keep room for Fire Dept to get emergency vehicles down there. If your loved one is injured or needs medical service you would want them to be able to get to the help they need as fast as possible. Cars parked in No Parking Zones WILL be ticketed. Safety 1st is our priority. No alcohol is permitted at park and dogs MUST be leashed and in control by owner.
Coming events this year, Baseball/Softball opening day ceremony is May 17th with the parade starting at 9 AM down Peterboro St from the Town Hall to the Park. Memorial Day Parade is Monday May 26th at 11 AM finishing with a tribute to our Veterans at the cemetery. Village wide garage sale day is Saturday June 7th get rid of that old stuff!
Watch for a new, revitalized Vernon Library! Clean up outside and in has already started. There are some new highly motivated members on the board so look for many improvements. We will keep you informed on changes and upcoming events!
The Budgets are in place and the winner is ….you! NO tax increase. Water and Sewer rates will remain the same. Another nice job by your Village Board and Village Clerk (thanks Karen). We will see an increase in VLT revenue (about $30,000), which is huge. Thanks to Senator Griffo and Assemblyman McGee who keep trying to restore it to its original amount.
There is lots of work this year for the village staff. They are looking at which sidewalks are in the most need. Lots of them need it but they only can do so many a year. Drainage issues to be finished on Cooper and started on North St. finishing with paving of North St. and maybe Ward St. The village is also planning to extend our water line down Peterboro to Youngs Rd down to Rte 5. This completes the loop, which helps with water pressure and is just better for our system. With possible growth to the village and added water revenue.
The Vernon Fire Department and Village Board have partnered in a new electronic sign to be located at the Fire Hall. The Fire Dept. did all the leg work (Thanks Jason) and we secured a grant from the State so the cost will be covered entirely. Hopefully this will help keep everyone informed on Community events, Fire Department functions and Village announcements.
I would also like to welcome New Village Judge William Croll to the bench. Welcome back Trustee Frank Emmerick and congrats to new Trustee Chris Woodcock.
Village meetings are the 3rd Monday of the month at 7:30 at the Village Hall. Changes to dates are posted on our website www.villageofvernonny.com along with contact info and upcoming events. Please keep us informed on issues, as we can’t help if we don’t know about them.

Have a safe and happy summer,
Your Mayor Jerry Seymour Jr.
