SPRING NEWSLETTER 2017

Oct 18, 2017

Dear Village of Vernon Residents,
I hope all is well and everyone had a healthy and safe winter. A sure sign that spring is here is when the village newsletter comes out! First, we should go over our annual reminders. I hate sounding like a broken record and going over the same things every spring but…. When mowing your lawn, please keep grass clippings out of the streets as they clog up our storm sewers. Leave your brush on the curb or edge of your yard and separate it from the grass clippings. Your D.P.W. is the best around, so please help them keep our village looking as great as they do.
Warm weather brings kids out on bikes, playing ball, walking around and just being kids. Please watch your speed around the neighborhood. It’s 30 M.P.H. in the Village and 20 M.P.H.by the school. Because the safety of our children is the villages #1priority, we will enforce the speed limits.
If you own a dog, the Village ordinance says they must be leashed and cleaned up after they make a deposit on a neighbor’s lawn. Your neighbors want to be able to enjoy the nice weather, so please be sure to monitor your dogs barking while outside.
Garbage pick-up is Thursday mornings. Garbage cans can be placed curbside after 4 P.M. on Wednesday and taken in by dark Thursday night. Old furniture such as chairs, mattresses, couches and tables will NOT be picked up, so don’t put it out to curb. Electronic devices such as TV’s or Computers will NOT be picked up as well. They are considered hazardous material and the D.P.W. isn’t certified to pick them up. Not our rules but the N.Y.S. D.E.C. rules.
We have had several discrepancies recently with water meter readings causing a short fall in water revenues. When meters are read and there is an unusual pattern, our water department will be contacting you to check and possibly replace the meters. If it is determined that tampering with the meter has happened, we will prosecute to the fullest extent. Water theft does affect all village residents.
Now the fun stuff! Our Annual Memorial Day Parade presented by the American Legion is Monday May 29th at 11 am. It will Start on Rte.5, proceed down Verona St. (Route 31) down Cooper St. and finish at the Cemetery where they will have a Veteran Memorial service. Hope we see you there!
The annual Village Wide Garage sale day is now going to be a garage sale weekend which will start on Friday June 2nd through Sunday the 4th. The village will put ads in the local papers and posters around town. Your junk may be someone else’s treasure. No permits are required! Mark, it down on your calendar.
The Park Program will kick off on Tuesday July 11th at 9 A.M. until Noon at the Village Park. It will be held on Tuesday, Thursday and Friday thru August 18th.
The Village Board has already lined up Movie Night at the Park again this year. We rented a large inflatable movie screen and will have an old fashion drive Inn at the park. It was awesome last year, so please come join us! The dates are Saturday July29th at dark and Saturday August 19th . If anyone has an idea for a great family friendly movie, let us know. Refreshments will be available. We will send flyers at the end of the school year as a reminder and everything is posted on our event calendar on our website at www.villageofvernonny.org. If you have any other event ideas, please pass them on to us.
The Vernon Village Board meets the third Monday of the month at 730 p.m. Please come and share your ideas, concerns or questions. We can’t answer questions or solve problems if we don’t know what they are.
Again, this year we were able to have no Village property tax increase thanks to the hard work of our board and Karen Rizzo, our village clerk. Also, water rates and sewer rates are the same. We can’t promise this every year as we are constantly threatened by sales tax loss, state aid and Video Lottery Terminal (VLT) money reduced or cut.
No paving is planned as we have done every street in the village in the past several years. We will do as many sidewalks as we can do. The ones we feel we need to do the most are the ones that will get done first.
I can never say this enough, but thank you to the best Fire Dept. anywhere around. I am proud to have them protect the village. I can’t tell you how much you are appreciated for the thankless job you do. The Vernon Fire Department is always looking for new members. If you would like to join the BEST department in the area, go to the fire department on any Tuesday night and talk to them.
I hope you all have a safe, happy fun filled summer
Your Mayor
Jerry Seymour
