SPRING NEWSLETTER 2015

May 2015
Dear Village of Vernon Residents,
Hope everyone is well after the long tough winter. There is activity and a buzz in the air as people are coming out from hibernation. With spring arriving, here are a few reminders for all of us to remember.
When mowing your lawn, please keep grass clippings out of the streets as they clog up our storm sewers. Leave your brush on the curb or edge of your yard and separate it from the grass clippings. This keeps streets clear and makes our DPW’s job a lot easier. Nice weather also brings out our children. So please when driving on our streets, keep your speed down to 30 MPH (20 in the school zone). It is our village speed limit. Safety for all of our residents is my biggest concern.
If you own a dog, village ordinance says, they must be leashed and cleaned up after they make a deposit on a neighbor’s lawn. Barking dogs will not be tolerated because remember your neighbor might want his or her windows open or sit in the backyard and enjoy the nice weather.
Garbage gets picked up Thursday mornings so no cans out till after 4 on Wednesday and taken back in by dark Thursday night. Old furniture such as chairs, mattresses, couches and tables will NOT be picked up, so don’t put it out to curb. Electronic devices such as TV’s or computers will NOT be picked up. They are considered hazardous material and our guys aren’t certified to pick them up. We try hard to keep our village as clean as possible so help us by following these rules.
Enough with the rules already, let’s move to positive news! Future events include opening day of Little League is Saturday May 16th. At 9 A.M. The parade starts down Peterboro St. finishing at the Village Park, with opening ceremonies. Make sure you catch a game it’s a family fun night out
American Legion hosts its annual Memorial Day Parade May 25th at 11 AM down Rte.5, down Verona St. and down Cooper St. to the Cemetery where they finish with a Veteran Memorial service.
On June 6th, back by popular demand is the annual village wide garage sale day! Your junk may be someone else’s treasure. No permits required!
Park program will kick off on Tuesday July 7th at 9AM till noon at the village park. It will be held on Tuesday, Thursday and Friday thru August 14th.There will be a field trip and pizza party for all who went all summer. Once again it will be run by the one and only Jessica Planck .Jess has done an awesome job restoring the popular program.

On August 15th our first annual Carnival day, featuring Air Time Inflatables. Bouncy houses, dry slides and water slides. Games and food will also be available and a dunk tank to get even with your local officials! A family fun day for all! This will also be held at the Village Park. Look for a flyer at the end of the school year with a free ice cream coupon to help you save the date.
With all the activities in the park, we will restripe the parking spaces .If lot is full, park at the village hall. Parking in No Parking Zones will be strictly enforced and you will be ticketed! We need Emergency Vehicles and personnel to have room enough to get down there if someone gets injured!
The new and improved Library has had a facelift inside and out. They are constantly updating with new books and movies. Programs for all ages are held monthly. Calendar of events are located on the village website under library link. Come spend some time at the library its more than books.
More good news… once again NO tax increase, and NO increase in water or sewer rates. I have a great team of board members and a great village clerk who have worked hard at keeping OUR taxes, water and sewer affordable. VLT money from Vernon Downs and agreement with County has been a nice revenue stream that makes my job a whole lot less stressful.
Look for lots of work going on in the village again this year. More sidewalks will be done on a need to do basis. Ward Street is next in line for repaving. We are looking at sometime this summer to get that done. With that, we will have done every street in the village over the past few years. Something I am personally proud of. Lastly, after getting stuck in red tape last year we will be breaking ground on the water extension sometime in May. Extension will go from Peterboro St. to Youngs Rd. to Rte. 5 completing our existing loop. Completion should be by end of the summer.
The Vernon Fire Department is always looking for new members. If you would like to join the BEST department in the area, come down on a Tuesday night and talk to them. Also if you happen to see any member of the department, thank them for their service. It’s the only pay they get and I know they deserve more. I am proud to say thanks for taking care of our village.
With the Oneida Dispatch cutting down to 3 days a week, we have decided to make the Rome Sentinel our official village newspaper. Sorry for any inconvenience this may cause, but we need news out as soon as we can.
Village meetings are the 3rd Monday of the month at 7:30 at the Village Hall. Changes to dates are posted on our website www.villageofvernonny.com along with contact info and upcoming events. Please keep us informed on issues, as we can’t help if we don’t know about them.
Have a safe and happy summer,
Your Mayor Jerry Seymour Jr.
